Drones in Celina

The Use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Commonly Known as Drone, in Celina

As technology advances and the use of drones increases, the Celina Police Department has continued to receive calls and reports of drones flying over neighborhoods and the properties of our residents. While we have followed up on each report and will continue to do so, it is important for every resident to know the facts surrounding drone usage.

On September 1, 2013, The State of Texas enacted a government code (chapter 423) which addressed the use of unmanned aircraft (drones). This law intended to limit one's ability to fly over someone's personal property. The law also sought to cease the use of drones for surveillance. However, on March 28, 2022, a United State District Court judge found the law to be unconstitutional and discontinued enforcement of this law by any government or police entity.

The Celina Police Department strives to protect the constitutional rights and the private property of every resident. We want every resident to feel safe, especially in the comfort of their personal properties. Please continue to let us know if your comfort or safety ever seems compromised.

With new technology and advancements in the drone field, it is important that people use these systems responsibly and respectfully. We ask that you visit www.knowbeforeyourfly.org for guideline regarding drone operations. We also encourage drone operators to visit www.faa.gov/uas for rules and regulations governing the use of drones.

If you have any questions or concerns related to drone usage, we encourage you to contact the Celina Police Department at (972) 382-2121.
